Desmond Child was the ultimate ’80s rock hitmaker, having had a hand in writing huge singles for artists including Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, and Joan Jett. Howard Johnson talks to him about his journey to success and the art of writing rock bangers!
“I REMEMBER THAT GENE Simmons started calling me a song doctor, but I was never a song doctor because I was writing songs from scratch. I wasn’t fixing songs. I was kind of fixing careers.” When hard rock took over US radio in the mid-’80s by marrying driving rhythms and ri!s with catchy, often poppy, melody lines, one man above all others was recognized as the songwriter who could add the necessary commercial fairy dust. That man was Desmond Child. ‘I Was Made For Lovin’ You’ by Kiss. ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ by Bon Jovi. ‘Dude (Looks like A Lady)’ by Aerosmith. ‘Poison’ by Alice Cooper. Desmond Child had a hand in writing all of these commercial rock juggernauts and many more besides. He may modestly tell me, “I’ve written almost 2000 songs and just 20 of them were hits.” Click here to read more.
